GALLERY MoMo Projects (Roppongi) is pleased to present “Double Resonance”, a two-person exhibition by Yoshiko Fukushima and Waka Yoshida, from Saturday, November 30 to Saturday, December 28, 2024.
Since the early stages of her career, Fukushima has developed a unique approach to portraiture, often depicting multiple figures in a darker color palette. The rich expressions and distinctive gazes of her subjects convey a profound inner world and leave a strong impression on the viewer. Recently, her style has evolved into more realistic portrayals that combine imagery from both familiar and unknown faces, based on memories of the past. This exhibition will primarily feature pen drawings showcasing intricate characters rendered with fine lines and dots, a shift from her previously bold brushwork.
Yoshida, on the other hand, has drawn inspiration from motifs in natural history, such as landscapes, dinosaurs, models, and minerals, creating works that span both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Lately, she has focused on invisible, unknown phenomena, expressing concepts like parallel worlds, multi-dimensional space, time, and living creatures in complex, layered compositions. “In painting—a mostly flat medium—I strive to convey depth and a sense of suspension, creating an immersive experience,” she explains. Her work incorporates familiar motifs while transcending reality to generate a unique, otherworldly perspective. In this exhibition, Yoshida presents works inspired by dinosaurs, blending textures that recall concrete or vintage archival materials to create paintings that evoke three-dimensionality.
This exhibition brings together ideas and perspectives that each artist has been developing and refining over time. Through this collection of carefully considered, new works, we invite viewers to experience the resonance and interplay between their art, much like a jam session of visual echoes.
Yoshiko Fukushima
Born in Nagano in 1985, Fukushima graduated from Musashino Art University’s Department of Oil Painting in 2009. During her studies, she received the Jury Prize at the Shell Art Award in 2006, and the Grand Prize in 2007. In 2014, her work expanded into illustrations for newspaper columns and book design, further broadening her artistic reach. Her works are housed in collections such as the The Japigozzi Collection and the Benetton Foundation.
Waka Yoshida
Born in Iwate in 1983, Yoshida graduated in 2006 from the Faculty of Art Education at Saitama University, and later completed her studies at the Setsu Mode Seminar in 2008. In 2007, she won the Annual Illustration Award, “The Choice”, and joined the artist collective Gazoku. She was selected as a finalist for the 17th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art in 2014. Active both in Japan and abroad, she held a solo exhibition in Taiwan this year. Her work, which explores the boundary between illustration and fine art, has received high acclaim from a wide audience.
GALLERY MoMo Projects（六本木）では、11月30日（土）から12月28日（土）まで、福島淑子と吉田和夏による二人展「Double Resonance」を開催いたします。
福島は、初期よりポートレートや複数の人物を中心に、やや暗めの色調で独自の人物表現を展開してきました。描かれる人物の豊かな表情と独特な眼差しは、鑑賞者に深い内面と強烈な印象を与えます。近年では、過去の記憶をもとに、身近な人や見知らぬ人のイメージを組み合わせ、より写実的な描写へと変化しています。今回の展示では、これまでの大胆な筆致から、細やかな線や点を駆使して緻密に描かれたキャラクターを描いたペン画を中心に展示いたします。 吉田はこれまで、地形や恐竜、立体模型、鉱物といった博物学的モチーフからインスピレーションを得て、平面・立体を問わず作品を制作してきました。近年は、目に見えない未知の存在に注目し、パラレルワールドや多元宇宙の空間、時間、生物などを多層的に表現しています。「絵画というほぼ平面上で、奥行きや浮遊感を意識し、没入感を追求する」と語り、身近なモチーフを用いながらも現実を超えた独自の世界観を生み出しています。今回の平面作品では、恐竜をモチーフに、コンクリートや古い資料を思わせる質感を加え、絵画を超え立体作品を想起させる作品を展示いたします。
本展覧会は、二人が制作中に温めていたアイデアや新たな視点を取り入れ、時間をかけて熟考した新たな試みを形にした作品で構成されています。作品を持ち寄り、ジャムセッションのように共鳴し響き合う展示を通じて、ふたりの余韻を楽しんでいただければ幸いです。
福島 淑子
1985年長野県生まれ。2009年武蔵野美術大学造形学部油絵学科卒業。大学在学中の2006年にシェル美術賞展で審査員賞、2007年には同賞でグランプリを受賞しました。2014年には信濃新聞社の時事コラムの挿絵や本の装丁にも選ばれ、活躍の場を広げています。作品はピゴッチコレクションやベネトン財団に収蔵されています。
吉田 和夏
1983年岩手県生まれ。2006年埼玉大学教育学部美術専修卒業後、セツモードセミナーで学び、2008年に卒業。2007年にイラストレーション ザ・チョイス年度賞を受賞し、作家集団画賊にも所属。2014年の第17回岡本太郎現代芸術賞では入選を果たしました。国内外での発表を続け、今年は台湾でも個展を開催。イラストとアートの境界を探る作品は、多方面で高く評価されています。
