GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku is pleased to present Tokuro Sakamoto's solo exhibition "dilly-dally" from November 25 (Sat) to December 23 (Sat).
Tokuro Sakamoto was born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1975 and graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1999 with a major in Japanese painting. However, he chose acrylic paint as a more suitable medium for painting contemporary Japanese motifs rather than highly textured mineral pigments on hemp paper and has since developed his own unique world of painting, which he has exhibited in numerous solo shows.
Since his early career, Sakamoto has looked at natural landscapes and man-made structures he sees in his daily life with an equivalent eye, finding beauty in their repeated rhythms, repetitions, overlaps, and hollows, extracting the necessary elements, and reconstructing them in a simple manner. The motifs that emerge in his works are highly abstract, even though they are representational paintings, and they are designed to intersect with the landscape in the viewer's memory, giving a sense of déjà vu.
Although the works may appear to be flat and designed, they give life to the motifs by making the viewer feel the temperature and sound of the landscape, and the artist's solid technical skills bring fresh surprises to our eyes by cutting out common scenes and motifs like abstract paintings, and expand our imagination to see the essence and beauty of things, or something else.
“Michikusa(道草)” is the original title of this exhibition and has two meanings: to loiter on the way and the grass on the wayside, but Sakamoto employed "dilly-dally" to express both images. In the works that are mainly silhouettes of weeds growing on the roadside and landscapes, he focuses on the beauty and depth that the artist himself often misses in his daily life.
Viewers will be drawn in by the familiar playground equipment, Sakamoto's unique way of cropping the landscape, and the mysterious depiction of depth that seems to exist within the flat picture plane. We hope you will visit the exhibition, even though the weather is getting colder by the day.
Artist's Comment
For this exhibition, I described some roadside weeds because I found the silhouettes of weeds beautiful when I was on the road.
Daily observations and discoveries make up my work.
My works are born from my daily life, and I depict things that are everywhere, things that exist in nature, and interesting man-made formations.
I want to honestly express my current point of view and interests.
When I am aware of my point of view, I find all things in nature interesting.

GALLERY MoMo 両国では、11月25日(土)から12月23日（土）まで、阪本トクロウの個展「道草」を開催いたします。
阪本トクロウは1975年山梨県生まれ、1999年に東京藝術大学美術学科絵画科日本画専攻を卒業しました。しかし、麻紙に質感の高い岩絵の具より、現代の日本的なモチーフを描くのに適した画材としてアクリル絵具選び、独自の絵画世界を切り開き、多くの個展を重ねてきました。
阪本は初期より、日常生活の中で目にした自然の風景や人工的な構造物を等価の眼差しで見つめ、そこで繰り返されるリズムや反復、重なりや中空に美を見出し、必要な要素を抽出してシンプルに画面に再構成しています。作家が実際に目にした特定の風景や構造物であるにも関わらず、作品として浮かび上がるそれらのモチーフは具象絵画でありながら極めて抽象性が高く、見る人に既視感を持って迫り、個々の記憶の中にある風景と交差するように仕組まれています。
作品はデザイン化されたフラットな画面にも見えますが、その中に風景の温度や音を感じさせてモチーフに生命感を与え、確かな技術力に裏打ちされた表現により、ありふれた景色やモチーフを抽象絵画のように切り出して私たちの目に新鮮な驚きをもたらし、物の持つ本質と美、あるいは別のものへと想像を膨らませています。
本展では、「道草」と言うタイトルの通り、アーティスト自身が日常の中で見逃してしまうことが多い美しさや深さに焦点を当て、道端に生える雑草のシルエットや風景を描いた作品を中心に展示します。
身近に感じる遊具や、阪本の独特な風景の切り取り方と、フラットな画面の中に奥行きがあるようにも見える不思議な描写が鑑賞者を引き込むでしょう。日を追うごとに寒さも厳しくなる時期ですが、ご高覧いただけたら幸いです。
アーティストコメント
今回の個展では、道草をしている時に雑草のシルエットが美しく感じたので、 道端の草をいくつか描きました。
日々の観察と発見が私の作品を構成しています。
作品は日常生活の中から生まれてきていて、 どこにでもあるもの、自然に存在しているもの、人工の造形物の面白さを描いています。
現在の自分の視点と興味を正直に表現したいと思っています。
視点を意識すると、森羅万象の全てが面白く感じます。
